For those of my two readers who don't know, for the last... oh, five or so years, I think? I've reviewed the year from my own point of view. Well, it's nearly that time of year where the earth reaches that arbitrary position relative to the sun where the Gregorian calendar says a new year begins, so! Let's have a look at 2011!
Good Guys Win
Okay, okay, there's no true good/evil in real life, it's all just opinions, but if you happen to think blowing up towers, being dictators and generally ass-hat-ery with your country are all bad things to do... well, the good guys won 2011. Osama bin Laden was killed, the Arab world went slightly nuts overthrowing half of their dictatorly rulers, such as Mubarak in Egypt, Ghadaffi in Lybia, later killing him (Although I can't say I agree with that >_< Waaaaaay too cold-blooded), Whatshisname in Tunisia, though that boss from Vortex Pinnacle in Syria is being stubborn and refusing to step down, despite his people really really wanting him to. Then, a week or so ago, Kim Jong-Il randomly dies too. It's like, lezomg! Good guys win!
Good Guys Lose
Okay, there was still plenty of bad stuff. The most powerful of the aftershocks from Christchurch's earthquake last year hit in February, killing 182 people in New Zealand's second largest city. Then, a few weeks after that, a massive earthquake, then tsunami hit off the coast of Japan, devastating the east coast of Japan, including a few nuclear power plants (Which, thankfully, didn't Chernobyl on everyone, mostly because Japan aren't complete idiots with their nuclear power plant running although they could've done things better). Two very tragic events that shocked the whole world.
In addition, we lost a few pretty cool people. Steve Jobs died, the guy who did an excellent job marketting Apple products and making them and the media mourned him hugely. Then, a week or so later, Dennis Ritchie, who invented C, UNIX and half the things used to run modern computers died and nobody really noticed. >_< Which kinda sucks but ah well. That's the world for you.
Then, Dinky died and I still have sad-faces when I hear my mum's new dog, Sally running around and I think it's Dinky, then realised it's not. :( Still miss you, Dinky.
Romance and Stuff
A few notable weddings and stuff! Prince William and Catherine Middleton got married and lots of people (Including myself) watched it. Yes, I realise, most people probably don't care, but shush, I think royalty is cool, and I oppose New Zealand becoming a republic entirely because I think having a monarch as the head of state is awesome.
More importantly, my older sister married her long-time partner in a far more awesome wedding ceremony. It had a little toy guy with a chainsaw on the wedding cake. How is that not more awesome? They also had their first baby last month and ZOMGI'MANUNCLE. Still haven't made my way up to meet her yet though :(
I'm also officially no-longer single and, quite probably, in my first, really really serious relationship. Hell, I'm moving town to live with her and I've never done anything like that before and it's a crazy-big step with crazy-big risks but oh well. Can't gain anything without risking things and she's a thing totally worth gaining.
Politics and Stuff
Labour kinda lost the New Zealand election for a variety of reasons and I'm totally not surprised in the least. Aaaaaand New Zealand is keeping MMP, which is good because First Past the Post looks really quite stupid to me.
America's got an election next year too (I think?), and it seems everyone the Republican Party is putting up is a complete moron. Sorry guys, but you're all idiots. Or, as far as I'm seeing. Probably because I don't live in America and I mostly get American political news from seeing people be complete idiots., because it's funny.
Music is Awesome
Went to see the Feelers early this year, making them the fourth band that I've gone to a concert of (The other three being Dragonforce, Iron Maiden and Dream Theater). I think my response to most of their songs that they played was "Hey! I know that song! That song's awesome! I didn't know a New Zealand band was capable of producing music that's that awesome!" I then proceeded to buy all of their albums. Seriously, since most of my 2 readers are probably Americans and haven't heard of the Feelers, have an obligatory YouTube link and check them out.
A few bands I like also puts albums out, including Iced Earth (Which was alright but not anything really special) and Nightwish (As much as I expected it early next year, hey, I'm not gonna moan! And it was pretty awesome too!).
Also, Adele kinda appeared out of nowhere (Despite her having an earlier album, I really hadn't heard of her before a few months ago) and, as much as she's really not the kind of music I usually listen to, she's actually pretty awesome and I think Isla's gotten me slightly hooked on her. DON'T JUDGE ME <_< >_> Seriously though, she's got a pretty amazing, and very genuine, un-auto-tuned, voice, pretty catchy and relate-able songs and seems like an ordinary, average person, not some far-off celebrity. Especially since she has a really common, Jeremy-Kyle-show-esque accent when she speaks which makes me lol because it does not match her singing voice in any way.
FOR SCIENCE
So planned on going into teacher's college, but apparently I need to know more about teaching before I can learn about teaching. Huh. Ah well.
Also, neutrinos are still being crazy and nobody's still entirely sure why, which is still really really awesome.
The planet also apparently hit seven billion people, so here's hoping we start getting to work on conolising Mars as soon as possible, and I'm certainly not saying that because I think the idea of living on Mars would be awesome. *cough*
Also, the world ended twice this year, which kinda sucked.
So. In short? 2011 was a pretty good year, I think. Started off with some pretty nasty stuff but, well, I'm happy. The 2010's are shaping up to be a pretty neat decade so far. Shame the world's gonna end again next year. Oh well, it had a pretty good run. See you all in 2012 and don't get too drunk tomorrow night!
